Marriage Equality Lessons Panel with Tracy Hollister, David Collins, Mark Phariss, Vic Holmes
Quail Ridge Books will be hosting a panel discussion on marriage equality moderated by Tracy Hollister with David Collins, Mark Phariss, and Vic Holmes.
What role did volunteers and plaintiffs play in winning the right to marry for same-sex couples years before most thought possible? How can the lessons they learned be applied to other LGBTQ causes?
Tracy Hollister (Raleigh), longtime advocate and Marriage Equality USA staffer, will share her own and others’ testimonies from The People’s Victory: Stories from the Front Lines in the Fight for Marriage Equality on how volunteers made a difference.
David Collins (Charlotte), author of Accidental Activists: Mark Phariss, Vic Holmes, and Their Fight for Marriage Equality in Texas, will join with the subjects of his book, Mark Phariss and Vic Holmes, to tell of love too long denied recognition and the emotional pain that led them to sue Texas for the right to marry.
"The People's Victory is a mirror for each of us to see our own power to fight for justice and create the change we want to see in our world." - Gavin Newsom, Lieutenant Governor of California
“Back in 1997 I was lucky enough to be in San Antonio for an HRC event. Little did I know that Mark and Vic would be on their first date that night—and would come to that event where I would meet them. Little did I know that years later they would make history by fighting for same-sex marriage to be legal in Texas. This beautiful book by Dave Collins tells the story of their struggle to make that happen. I’m so proud of them, so happy for them—and delighted that their inspirational story has been recorded in a book that will keep you turning the pages late into the night.”—Betty DeGeneres (mother of Ellen), the first straight spokeswoman for the Human Rights Campaign’s National Coming Out Project, and the author of Love, Ellen: A Mother/Daughter Journey and Just a Mom
